A Week in the News - 2nd August 2013

Friday 2nd of August 2013  |  Category: Pregnancy News  |  Written by:

This week saw the inevitable calm after the storm as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge moved out of the spotlight and deservedly had some time alone. Whilst Britain continued to experience warm, yet stormy, weather and children (and teachers!) across the country continued to enjoy the summer holidays. We also had to deal with the sad news of the "campaign of cruelty" that young Daniel Pelka went through, everyone hopes that events like this will never take place again.

We'll take a look now at some of the news stories to hit the papers this week with our weekly round up of all things babies and pregnancy.

Careers and Babies, Complaining about Kids

Across the Telegraph this week we've seen an interesting focus on children and how they may affect careers. In a blog on the matter Louisa Peacock questions just when is the right time to have a baby in your career? Louisa has decided to wait until what she classes as "the right time" to have children, but is happy that we live in a world where you have various options. Although I'm sure some young people would argue that if you want to own a house, and have a baby then your options are fairly limited. Perhaps though the options aren't so clear cut when you have a war breaking out in the office between mums and "non mums", although the suggestion that everyone is allowed similar flexibility is only fair, isn't it?

The Telegraph and other news sources have also look at why it is socially unacceptable to complain about your children. It seems a bit odd to me, surely we live in a world where free speech is acceptable, so why do we feel inhibited to tell others how we really feel? I can't believe that any parent isn't frustrated by their children every now and again, even though of course they still love them!

Post-Pregnancy Bodies, Big Babies and a Surprise

In The Guardian there was a focus on the debate that has raged since a Sky newscaster asked "when will Kate's bump go?", seemingly she was shocked that the bump doesn't disappear immediately! There have been various reports across the media on this, but the comment from Naomi McAuliffe that people shouldn't be surprised by pregnancy changing women's bodies was interesting. The media and celebrity obsession has led some of us to forget that a woman's body does change during pregnancy, and afterwards, and perhaps it is about time that everyone remembers that. Especially when women end up having a baby that weights almost a stone as this report in the Daily Mail shows us. That is one big baby!

Finally this week the heartwarming story of a baby with menegitis whose life support was turned off only for the baby to survive after being taken to a hospice. This is a wonderful story to finish our roundup with, and reminds us that no all news is bad news!

We'll be back again next week with another round up of the news, if you spot anything in the mean time get in touch via the site or through our twitter account @MumNetwork.
